The Archbishop of the province of Church of Uganda has this morning paid a courtesy visit to Soroti University. In his pastoral visit to Teso sub region, the Archbishop for the Church of Uganda His Grace, the most Rev. Dr. Stephen Kazimba Mugalu visited Soroti University and performed a groundbreaking ceremony at the proposed site for the Anglican Chaplaincy.

He was received to the University by the Vice chancellor, Prof. JR Ikoja, staff, and students.

In his welcome remarks the VC thanked the archbishop for honouring the request to visit the University to perform the groundbreaking ceremony at the site where the Anglicans will establish the church.

According to the University and tertiary institutions act, the Universities are required to provide an enabling environment for the establishment of areas of worship for Catholics, Anglicans, and Muslims.

The law also provides for the three religious groups to provide for the recruitment of qualified persons to be employed to conduct religious affairs to the university community.

Recently the university on the recommendations of the three denominations filled the positions of university imam, and the Chaplains to offer religious guidance, counselling, and spiritual nourishment to the University community.

The archbishop thanked the university community for their resilience and dedication to serving the community and urged them to remain steadfast in their quest to offer quality education.

The archbishop proceeded to perform the groundbreaking ceremony and planted a tree at the site earmarked for the Anglican church.

The Archbishop was accompanied by the Bishop of Soroti Diocese Rt. Rev. Kosea Odongo, the Chaplain of Soroti University Anglican Chaplaincy Rev. Can. Dr Samuel Opol among others.

Soroti University recently offered land to the Muslim community to construct a mosque which is now near completion.
