Soroti University Council Members have unanimously elected Professor Pius Okong as their Chairperson. In a meeting that took place in Striker Hotel Moroto on the 10th of September 2025, the University Council constituted after the end of term of office of the Second Council saw the members unanimously elect Prof. Pius Okong a renowned Ugandan Obstetrician and Gynaecologist as the Chairperson of the Third University Council.

Prof. Okong is a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist with extensive experience in maternal and neonatal health who held various leadership positions, including President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Uganda, worked with International Organizations such as the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Current Chairperson of the Health Service Commission – Uganda since February 2012 among others.
In his address to the Third Council Members the Chancellor Soroti University Prof. Omaswa congratulated Prof. Okong urging the new Members to uphold the standard set by the Second Council. He said that health and education are the preconditions for a productive life, noting that nothing is important without the right climate. He said Soroti University is in the era of great expectations and new hope.
The Vice Chancellor in his welcome remarks encouraged members to generate solutions and lobby for funds to support university’s growth. “Discuss with management relevant courses to be introduced, we do not want to duplicate courses”
Other Members of Council include Hon. Grace Akello the former Ambassador, Engineer Henry Francis Okinyal, from Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers, Staff representatives among others. While administering oath to Council Members, the Assistant Registrar Moroto High Court Her Worship Nankya Nusra, who represented the Resident Judge His Lordship Chemusto Tom cautioned the new Council Members to take the oath seriously as failure to comply has serious consequences. She said that duties and responsibilities have legal consequences.

Council is a Supreme organ of the University tasked with policy making, offering strategic direction and guidance, academic policy and strategy, ensuring compliance, budget approval and financial oversight among others.

Other vibrant members of the council include VC Busitema University Prof. Paul Wako, Prof. Akileng Geoffrey, Mr. John Pakony Ochira, Mr. Edward Kiwanuka, Mr. Cornelius Ojangole from NUDIPU among others.
The new Council Members are undergoing training by Mr. Jerome Ojulun, a renown consultant, on visionary leadership. This is meant to prepare the team to handle Council business.
