You are most welcome to the Nursing Department page. The Nursing Department is one of the departments in the School of Health Sciences (SHS) at Soroti University. The department started in 2019 with intake of first cohort of students of Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) program. The mission of the department is to offer high quality and relevant nursing and midwifery education through intensive and extensive knowledge search, construction, application, and transfer. Our vision is to be a centre of excellence in nursing and midwifery education both locally and internationally. In pursuit of our mission and vision, we cherish the following values: hard work, collaboration, morality, objectivity, and professionalism.
The department has a dedicated team of academic staff with postgraduate qualifications in specialized areas such as critical care nursing, midwifery, women’s health, pediatrics, medical education, nursing leadership and management. The department is also supported by a formidable team of academic staff for non-clinical courses such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, and public health. We also have very well-equipped nursing, midwifery, microbiology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and pathology laboratories which students use to learn both biomedical and clinical sciences. We are also proud to have other support systems and structures in place such as fast and reliable internet, well stocked library, office of the dean SHS, and Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.
Currently, we offer a four- year fulltime Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) degree program. Our curriculum is competence based and at the end of this course, our graduates will have all the desired 21st century skills in addition to having advanced knowledge and skills in biomedical sciences, medical and surgical nursing, critical care and emergency nursing, midwifery and gynecology nursing, pediatric nursing, mental health nursing, Ear Nose and Throat nursing, ophthalmic nursing, community nursing, medical pedagogy, and research among others. Soon, we shall offer more academic programs starting with Bachelor of Midwifery Science (BMS) and Bachelor of Nursing Science for diploma holders (BNSE). We also aspire to transition from being the department to an independent School of Nursing and Midwifery.
