Bridging Faith and Leadership: Soroti University unites religious leaders for student transformation

Soroti University on Thursday, 16th October 2025, hosted an interfaith leadership training workshop that brought together religious leaders, chaplains, and faith representatives from across the university community.
The workshop, graced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ikoja J.R. Odongo, marked a new step in strengthening moral leadership and unity among the three faiths represented at Soroti University — Catholic, Protestant, and Muslim communities.
Keynote highlights from Prof. Ikoja J.R. Odongo
In his keynote address, Prof. Ikoja commended the religious leaders for their vital role in nurturing spiritual and moral values among students. He emphasized that diversity should be viewed as a bridge rather than a barrier, and urged faith leaders to work together in promoting peace, understanding, and holistic development within the university.
“By engaging in open-minded dialogue, we can break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and build bridges of understanding,” he remarked.

The Vice Chancellor reaffirmed Soroti University’s commitment to interfaith harmony, noting that each of the three gazetted faith institutions has been allocated land for the establishment of worship centers. This, he said, demonstrates the university’s recognition of the importance of spiritual growth within its community.
Shared goals for a united community
Prof. Ikoja outlined several expected outcomes from the workshop, including:
Promoting religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence:
Faith leaders were encouraged to guide their followers toward respect for people of other faiths and to avoid any actions that could cause division or unrest.
Collaborative institutional development:
Religious leaders were urged to support university initiatives and mobilize resources that advance Soroti University’s development agenda.
Building attitudes of teamwork and humility:
The Vice Chancellor reminded participants that attitude shapes the community we build, and called for humility, collaboration, and mutual respect in service.
Embracing diversity:
“We may never think alike,” he said, “but we must learn to live together and appreciate our differences as strengths rather than obstacles.”
Empowering faith leaders to support students
In addressing student challenges, Prof. Ikoja encouraged religious leaders to take an active role in providing counseling, mentorship, and emotional support to students facing academic, financial, and personal difficulties.
He called for practical and compassionate interventions that meet the diverse needs of learners, and highlighted the importance of being approachable, empathetic, and committed to student wellbeing.
