National Council for Higher Education and the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council has applauded Soroti university for its commitment, resilience and level of dedication to uphold the standard of Medical Education in Uganda aimed at producing the doctors this world needs. This was contained in a speech during the routine inspection visit of Soroti university by a team from National Council for Higher Education and the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council led by the chair council, Prof. Okullo Joel.

The team was at the university 25th – 26th February 2025 to assess the infrastructure, staffing, curriculum implementation and visiting placement sites for clinical year, student support and welfare among others.
The team visited the Soroti university labs, equipment, and had a meeting with the teaching and support staff to assess the curriculum implementation. The committee also had interface with students.
“What started as an idea has turned out to be a reality”, said Prof. Okullo. ‘We have witnessed the level of dedication and pray the spirit continues’. We have noted great progress compared to our last visit, the labs are in very good condition Prof. Okullo Joel said.
He thanked the leadership of Soroti university for the big improvement in the recruitment of staff. We are happy about the progress and appeal to all of us to work together.

We come in peace to nurture and guide, receive our recommendation with positivity and openness, ease and implement the findings. The goal is to produce doctors and medical practitioners that will be received globally.
The team also commended the university for opening doors to foreign students. “We are happy to note that other non-Ugandans have been admitted to Soroti university, we encourage internationalization of universities and intercultural universities that can blend globally.
The team also visited Soroti regional referral hospital and Katakwi general hospital the second placement site for training. They noted that Soroti hospital is overcrowded with no side rooms for teaching, and tiny labs.
During their visit to Katakwi hospital, the team noted that the hospital as an ideal site for clinical placing and encouraged the university to finalize support arrangements for the hospital. The review visit comes after the last monitoring visit was carried out in October 2022.
The Vice Chancellor, in his welcome remarks, thanked the team for constantly guiding them and pledged to always implement key recommendations. “We are determined to produce doctors that is globally employable” Prof. Ikoja said.
