Soroti University Honored with NSSF Compliance Award at Eastern Regional Meeting

Soroti University was proudly recognized by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) as one of the most compliant employers in Uganda’s Eastern region during the NSSF Regional Employers’ Meeting held at Mbale Resort Hotel.

Representing the University at the event was Mr. Abdullah Oyare Shaban, the Deputy University Secretary, who accepted the award on behalf of the institution. This prestigious compliance award affirms Soroti University’s unwavering commitment to employee welfare and financial security. By consistently meeting its statutory obligation to remit the 15% social security contribution—comprising 5% from employees and 10% from the employer—the University sets a benchmark for accountability and care in the workplace.

Why the Award Matters

Receiving the NSSF Compliance Award isn’t just about meeting legal requirements. It reflects Soroti University’s core values: investing in people, promoting long-term financial wellbeing, and cultivating a workplace culture built on trust. Compliant employers not only avoid legal penalties but also motivate their staff by showing that their future matters.

“When you’re compliant with NSSF contributions for your employees, your staff feel valued and motivated. You avoid serious penalties and play a direct role in securing better retirement outcomes,” said Geoffrey Sajjabi, NSSF’s Chief Commercial Officer.

During the event, NSSF Managing Director Patrick Ayota urged workers to hold employers accountable and report cases of non-compliance, reassuring employees that their identities would be protected. He emphasized that NSSF contributions are a right for all employees aged 16 and above, regardless of salary, contract status, or probation period.

The meeting also offered vital awareness for both employers and employees on why saving with NSSF is essential. Many beneficiaries shared powerful testimonies of how NSSF savings supported them in retirement.

A Legacy of Governance Excellence

This recent recognition adds to Soroti University’s growing reputation for exemplary governance. In October 18, 2024, the University was honored at the 3rd Corporate Governance Awards organized by the Institute of Corporate Governance Uganda (ICGU) Attended by Mr. David Robert Wanda at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala. The awards, themed “Recognizing Resilience and Sustainable Impact,” celebrated organizations that excel in corporate governance, enhancing transparency, accountability, and leadership within their sectors.

As Soroti University continues to champion compliance and transparency, these accolades serve as a reminder to all employers that social security and good governance aren’t burdens—they’re long-term investments in human capital.

“Compliance isn’t just a legal requirement—it’s a commitment to your people’s future,” emphasized David Rwamatungi, NSSF’s Senior Manager of Mandatory Business.

Soroti University remains committed to excellence not just in education, but also in nurturing a financially secure and well-governed workforce for generations to come.
