Soroti University’s School of Engineering and Technology Inspires the Public through Radio Talk Show on Innovation and National Transformation


Theme: “Engineering Innovation for National Transformation: The Role of Soroti University’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET)”

Soroti University, through the School of Engineering and Technology (SET), successfully held an enlightening radio talk show on October 6, 2025, at Etop FM Radio, engaging the public on how engineering education and innovation are driving Uganda’s journey toward industrialization and sustainable development.

The distinguished panel featured Dr. Excellence Favor (Deputy Dean, School and Technology (SET)), Mr. Ebiju Fabian Dickens (Industry Liaison Officer) and Mr. Nyene Hassan (University Public Relations officer), who were graciously accompanied by Dr Raphael Naryongo (Head of Department of  Computer Science and Informatics) and also the chairperson  of Publications/Branding/Marketing, Arbitration, & Alumni Relations Committee of SET, Dr Musa Satya Chemisto (Head of Departments of Electronics and Computer Engineering),  Dr Hellen Aluku (Head of Department Of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering), Mr Wafula Bernard (School administrator) -who passionately discussed how Soroti University is shaping the next generation of engineers equipped for the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions.

The radio discussion centered on the main theme, “Engineering Innovation for National Transformation,” highlighting key areas such as:

  • The vision and mission of Soroti University and the School of Engineering and Technology.
  • The academic programmes currently offered and those under development, including upcoming graduate programmes.
  • SET’s contribution to Uganda’s Vision 2040, NDP IV, Africa Agenda 2063, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly in industrialization, infrastructure development, and digital transformation.
  • Ongoing innovation and research projects, including IoT-based smart systems, renewable energy solutions, sustainable agriculture technologies Climate sustanability etc..
  • Student experiences through practical training, internships, and innovation hubs.
  • Community engagement initiatives such as equipment repair support, technology transfer workshops, and mentorship for local innovators.

In addition, the team sensitized the public about admission opportunities, including pathways through the Higher Education Access Certificate (HEAC), and encouraged young innovators, artisans, and entrepreneurs to utilize the SET Innovation and ICT Hub to transform their ideas into viable enterprises.

The talk show also featured an engaging segment on the current and upcoming departments across SET and the School of Health Sciences, illustrating Soroti University’s holistic approach to advancing technology, health, and community development.

The public response was overwhelming—with numerous callers expressing excitement, curiosity, and pride in Soroti University’s growing impact. Many listeners have since visited the university for inquiries about admissions, collaborations, and innovation opportunities.

In closing remarks, Dr. Excellence Favor expressed gratitude to the community and reaffirmed SET’s commitment to nurturing engineers and innovators who transform Uganda and Africa. She emphasized that Soroti University remains a hub of innovation, research, and practical training for the region and beyond.

Future Outlook 

Building on the overwhelming success and public enthusiasm from the Radio Talk Show, the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) at Soroti University is set to extend its impact through a series of regional outreach and engagement programmes with secondary schools, Technical institutions and community across the Teso sub-region and neighbouring regions. These will include school-based career sensitization drives, community technology engagements, and the upcoming Regional Innovation Challenge and Hackathons designed to nurture creativity and entrepreneurship among youth. In addition, the School plans to host more radio talk shows and introduce television features to broaden awareness about Soroti University’s academic excellence, innovation agenda, and community-focused mission. These initiatives reaffirm SET’s commitment to bridging academia, industry, and society – transforming knowledge into action for Uganda’s sustainable development.
