A Continental Gathering of Innovation and Thought Leadership

The UNESCO Africa Engineering Week is a premier annual platform that convenes engineers, academics, policymakers, industry actors, and students from across Africa and the world. This year’s focus on inclusivity and women-led innovation resonated strongly with global efforts to build equitable, sustainable, and future-ready engineering solutions for Africa. Sessions ranged from high-level policy dialogues, exhibitions of cutting-edge engineering technologies, technical workshops, youth innovation competitions, and networking forums linking academia with industry. Soroti University’s participation highlighted its commitment to excellence in STEM education, research, and innovation, while amplifying its vision to contribute to Uganda Vision 2040, National Development Plan IV, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Launch of CUED-U: A Landmark for Engineering Education in Uganda

One of the most significant milestones of the week was the official launch of the Consortium of University Engineering Deans–Uganda (CUED-U), a professional body bringing together leaders of engineering faculties across Ugandan universities. The Consortium seeks to harmonize curricula, foster collaboration in research and innovation, strengthen industry linkages, and advocate for engineering’s role in national and regional development.

Soroti University’s Dr. Excellence Favor, Deputy Dean of SET, was elected as the Vice Chair of the CUED-U Steering interim Committee, an appointment that places Soroti University at the heart of shaping the future of engineering education and practice in Uganda. Her election signals both trust and recognition of Soroti University’s leadership capacity, reinforcing its visibility among peer institutions and stakeholders.
