One trophy and four medals are in the hands of Soroti University after a resounding victory at the inaugural Eastern Uganda University Debate Championship held at Mbale School of Hygiene over the weekend.
Soroti University emerged champions, defeating the likes of Busitema University, Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Mbale School of Hygiene and Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mbale Campus, in a thrilling competition organised by the Eastern Uganda University Debate Society (EUUDS), a student-led youth movement promoting debate, communication and leadership among young people.

The competition featured debate, public speaking and poetry, allowing students to demonstrate their communication, critical thinking, confidence and public speaking skills.
In the debating category, Eripu John and Kayingo Jimmy emerged champions. Asimo Robinah was declared champion in the Poetry category, while Nimusiima Bridget was first runner-up in the Public Speaking category.
EUUDS promotes debating as a platform for developing self-confidence, resilience, character and leadership while equipping young people with skills beyond the classroom.
Speaking after the competition, Soroti University team lead Nimusiima Bridget thanked the Public Relations Office and University generally for supporting the debating club and called for continued support for debating and other co-curricular activities.

She noted that such activities complement classroom learning by providing students with the opportunities to develop teamwork, confidence, public speaking and leadership skills.
In May this year, Soroti University was again crowned champions in the inaugural Eastern Uganda Deposit Protection Fund quiz. The university is committed to developing talent and skills with diverse abilities beyond core professional growth.
