Soroti University has officially taken a giant leap into the digital age, successfully replacing traditional paper ballots with UniVote—a custom electronic voting platform built entirely on campus by the University’s ICT Innovations Hub.
Crafted by developers Gerald Kisangala and Nixon Kamugisha, UniVote was born out of a desire to fix the logistical headaches of old-school university elections. Instead of slow, manual counts and paper-heavy processes, the team engineered a fast, secure, and accessible digital experience that proves local innovators don’t need to look outward to solve institutional challenges.
The First Test: Freshman Guild Elections 2026/2027
UniVote made its grand debut during the recent Freshman Guild Elections for Chief Fresher, and the real-world results exceeded expectations:
- Stellar Turnout: The system recorded an impressive 90.9% voter turnout, with 481 valid votes cast out of 529 verified voters.
- The Outcome: Joan Mbwali claimed victory with 328 votes (68.2%), while Nakasala Levi earned 153 votes (31.8%).
More importantly, the numbers reflect a deep student trust in the new technology, showing that digital voting can radically boost engagement in campus democracy.

UniVote’s success is much more than a software upgrade—it is a proof of concept for homegrown engineering.
