School of Engineering and Technology Participates in National Science, Technology, and Innovation Engagement

Soroti University’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET), represented by Dr. Excellence Favor, the Deputy Dean and Vice Chairperson of the Consortium of Engineering Deans of Uganda (CUED-U), participated in a high-level engagement with H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House Entebbe. The meeting, themed “Science, Technology, and Innovation for National Transformation,” brought together top scientists, innovators, and academic leaders to deliberate on advancing Uganda’s development through applied science, technology, and value addition.

The event, organized by the Office of the President under the Science, Technology, and Innovation Secretariat, emphasized the central role of engineering and innovation in realizing Uganda’s Vision 2040, National Development Plan (NDP) IV, and Africa Agenda 2063.
H.E. the President urged scientists and engineers to break free from the colonial mindset that promotes consumption over production, calling instead for a paradigm shift toward manufacturing, innovation, and self-reliance. He underscored the need for universities to drive industrialization through practical engineering education and locally driven research.

Where all University representatives in the meeting affirmed the ongoing commitment to aligning all the their academic programmes with national development goals, emphasizing applied research initiatives in renewable energy, smart systems, climate sustainability etc. They emphasised the role of engineering as a hubs for nurturing engineers who not only think critically but also design and implement sustainable solutions for Uganda’s socio-economic growth.

The meeting also featured presentations from key university leaders, including members of CUED-U, who showcased efforts to strengthen engineering education, foster industry partnerships, and promote hands-on learning. The President lauded the universities for their strides in innovation and endorsed plans to establish innovation hubs such as the Engineering Development and Innovation Centre (EDIC) and AI and Electronics Centre in Namanve.

Soroti University’s participation in this national dialogue reflects its strategic focus on engineering for community transformation, and its vision to be a center of excellence in applied science, technology, and innovation.
The University remains dedicated to contributing to Uganda’s industrial and digital revolution through research, innovation, and partnerships that empower students, industries, and communities.

In the networking session following the engagement, Dr. Excellence Favor shared Soroti University’s commitment to fostering innovation-driven education and community-centered engineering excellence. “At Soroti University, we believe innovation begins with purpose, grows through collaboration, and transforms through action,” said Dr. Excellence Favor.
